Marty Irby: Katherine Heigl Joins Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy to Save Wild Horses

A terrifying wild horse roundup in action

A terrifying wild horse roundup in action

I call on the Bureau of Land Management to leave the Onaqui horses on the land, manage them humanely with fertility control, and limit livestock grazing to protect the ecosystem.”

— Katherine Heigl

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, USA, May 31, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — By Marty Irby, Animal Wellness Action

President Richard Nixon probably signed as many landmark environmental bills as any of our U.S. chief executives.

He signed into law the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. He also signed into law the Wild Horse and Free-Roaming Burros Act, saying it embodies "the best judgment of both the Congress and the executive branch." He added that it "permits the establishment of ranges for their use" and "makes killing of molesting them a Federal crime," prohibiting their sale or that of their remains."

He captured more than just a legal summation when he wrote the following in his signing statement:

"'WE NEED the tonic of wildness.' During the past several months, many thousands of Americans, particularly children, have concurred in Thoreau's plea with an outpouring of concern for the preservation of wild horses and burros on our Western ranges. The 11-year-old son of one Congressman felt deeply enough on the issue to himself testify before the House of Representatives and countless personal letters–many from young people-have come to the Congress, to the Federal land management agencies, and in my own mail. I take special pleasure today, therefore, in signing strong new legislation to protect these noble animals."

Now 50 years later, his stirring words are long forgotten by many of today's government bureaucrats and more than a few sitting members of Congress. Just this week, President Biden's budget includes record spending for roundups and removals of these horses from our public lands.

I imagine that 11-year-old boy who testified before Congress – Gregory Gude, son of Representative Gilbert Gude of Maryland – would be deeply disappointed in what's been revealed this month. It's been a boon for kill buyers who line their pockets from the slaughter of the wild horses and burros that have been rounded up via helicopter chase and incarcerated in mass holding facilities – well over 50,000 held captive today.

Once in holding, the options are few, and many of these majestic icons are 'adopted out' to homes that would domesticate them and utilize them as working animals – or so we thought. The New York Times' recent investigation into these alleged adoptions has revealed that many of the horses thought to be adopted are actually being funneled straight into the horse slaughter pipeline – shot in the head with a bolt gun, and ultimately ending up as slabs of meat on foreign dinner plates – a savory dish for the French and Chinese to sink their teeth into.

And while Animal Wellness Action (AWA), the Center for a Humane Economy (CHE), and the Animal Wellness Foundation (AWF) have been working for the past three years to ensure the protection of our wild horses and burros, we're doubling down in light of the most recent news.

"Big Beef" interests like the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) want nothing more than to eradicate the wild equids on the range so that they can utilize the lands to graze cattle on the taxpayer's dime, paying little more than a few bucks a year for grazing permits. In April, we were joined by more than 70 groups in a letter to Secretary Deb Haaland – the first American Indian sat in the President's Cabinet – calling for a freeze on grazing permits. There's been no response from Haaland despite the media contacting the Secretary's Office and the White House who declined to comment.

The lack of response from the Biden Administration, combined with Haaland's testimony before the House Appropriations Committee on April 20th that the Dept. of Interior is "in agreement with the plan of the previous Administration," in continuing to eradicate the wild horses and burros on public lands, has amounted not only to a terrible offense against wild horses and burros, but the millions of horse advocates who expected anything but the continuation of the status quo from this Administration.

This week we partnered with actress Katherine Heigl to help stop the mass round-up and removal of perhaps 80 percent of the famed and beloved Onaqui wild horses of western Utah. Our billboards draw attention to plans to reduce the herd size by 80 percent, and our new microsite, www.SaveTheOnaqui.org, details why this herd is so special and undeserving of this attempt to draw down their numbers so dramatically.

Heigl, who lives in Summit County and keeps horses at her ranch in the Kamas Valley, said in a release this week from AWA, CHE, and AWF on the Associated Press' website:

"With their historic place on the public lands of Utah, the Onaqui horses are living treasures that contribute to the beauty of the Great Basin Desert, as well as the economic vitality of nearby communities. Instead of cruel helicopter roundups, I call on the Bureau of Land Management to leave the Onaqui horses on the land, manage them humanely with fertility control, and limit livestock grazing to protect the ecosystem."

The roundup is scheduled to begin July 12 and will result in between 300—400 of the 500 horses being permanently removed from their Herd Management Area (HMA) – around 80 percent of the herd.

We've appealed to Secretary Haaland to turn around this situation and to no long keep this program on auto-pilot. We've also asked the President – long a champion of horses and who came into office just a year after the Wild Horse and Burro Act was enacted – to intervene. We were joined by more than 90 groups, rescues, and businesses; and more than 1,100 individuals in a letter to the President calling for Biden to immediately place a moratorium on the roundups. So many groups are deeply disappointed that this Administration is attempting to liquidate so many herds and allowing them to go to slaughter.

Join us today in the effort to protect the icons who blazed the Western Frontier by clicking here to add your name to the roster. 11-year-old Gregory Gude was brave enough and willing to take the time to testify before Congress to protect the horses' half a century ago, and we should be too.

Marty Irby is the executive director at Animal Wellness Action in Washington, D.C., who was named as one of The Hill's Top Lobbyists for 2019 and 2020, and was recently honored by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, II for his work to protect horses. HCM Deck’s Social/Collaborative Learning Conference will start on June 22nd, 2021

HCM Deck

L&D thought leaders from Google, Volvo, or Blinkist will cover social/collaborative learning at a free online event L&D Meetup #SocialCollaborativeLearning.

In my experience, and I suppose many experts would agree, collaborative social learning is an integral part of a complementary L&D strategy.”

— Dorota Piotrowska, VP of People and Organization Development at HCM Deck

KRAKOW, POLAND, May 31, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — 86% of L&D professionals around the globe believe people are more engaged when learning in a social/collaborative way and 91% think that employees who learn together become more successful, says LinkedIn Workplace Learning Report 2021. This trust in social/collaborative learning is well-founded in research. According to Harvard Business School research, the completion rate of social/collaborative learning programs is 85% higher. The numbers are compelling and the opportunities for the future of work promising. Yet this does not come without its challenges for L&D.

Already on June 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, global experts will address the most difficult issues in social/collaborative learning and will show how to best take advantage of the opportunities:

→ Designing learning communities, the topic will be presented by Matthew Murray, Leslie Powell, and Brad Kemp – Digital Learning Design, Organizational Development, and Learning Experience experts from Google.

→ Maximizing the impact of microlearning the advice will be delivered by Hamira Riaz, VP Strategic Leadership at Volvo.

→ Collaborative learning formats in the new, remote work times, namely, how is social/collaborative learning done at Blinkist by Edward Leach, Well-being Specialist, Vilmalotta Ala-Tuuhonen, Senior People Development Specialist and Anna-Lisa Obermann, Director of People & Workplace in the company.

→ Lifelong/continuous learning, namely, how to practice it in simple steps. The keynote will be presented by Sylwia Górska-Przytulska, Global Learning and Development Leader.

The agenda of the event also includes topics such as experiential learning, future of work and social/collaborative learning, self-determined and lifelong learning from speakers from Netguru or HCM Deck.

“In my experience, and I suppose many experts would agree, collaborative social learning is an integral part of a complementary L&D strategy. We live in times of rapidly decreasing 'expiration date' of knowledge and so it is critical that we leverage the individual and the collective team and cross-team knowledge and experience when collaborating on company outcomes,” says Dorota Piotrowska, VP of People and Organization Development at HCM Deck. “Yet many L&D professionals may feel overwhelmed by the task of redesigning the social/peer2peer, the structured and the on the job learning in the new hybrid reality. I'm sure the L&D Meetup, hosting many great experts from renowned organizations, will help L&D vested professionals take ownership of (re)designing collaborative social learning and bringing learning culture and strategy into a new, hybrid future proof level.”

The event’s format reflects one of the ingredients of successful social/collaborative learning – learning in the flow of work. The online conference will span 3 days, with 3 keynotes delivered every day, so that the participants can align their workday with the event and focus on the topics that interest them most.

The L&D Meetup #SocialCollaborativeLearning starts on June 22nd at 9:30 am CEST. Participation in the event is free of charge. Registration is available here.

Climedec Technology Uses Seawater Desalination Discharge for Hydrogen Storage and Manufacturing CO2 Containing Products

SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, May 31, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — Technologists at Pact Renewables Pty Ltd have developed a unique zero waste technology platform that uses minerals and metals recovered from reject brine of seawater desalination plants for solid-state storage of hydrogen energy and beneficial use of carbon dioxide for the manufacture of degradable products in an integrated process loop. The technology, known as Climedec, offers the potential to facilitate global efforts to transition from a fossil fuel to a hydrogen economy.

Climedec is driven by a proven saline water and wastewater processing core technology, developed by Dr Aharon Arakel and his team which was piloted at several sites, publicly demonstrated and first licensed in 2000. The technology development efforts have also heavily benefited from Dr Arakel’s involvement in global carbon capture and storage (CCS) as well as hydrogen storage technology development projects. Since the inception of the project, the core technology has undergone substantial improvements and is now integrated with complementary technologies which collectively comprise the Climedec technology platform. These complementary technologies enable production of high purity magnesium metal for safe storage of hydrogen energy, specialty potash salts for use in the manufacture of alkaline fuel cells, and integrated production of high purity water in a solar membrane distillation process for use in hydrogen electrolysers. Other proprietary technologies of the platform enable production of mineral-based composites that, once reacted with carbon dioxide (CO2), produce specialised feedstock materials for the manufacture of a wide range of degradable industrial and agricultural products, and consumer goods.

Central to this enabling technology is the beneficial use of massive volumes of reject brines from numerous seawater desalination plants around the globe and CO2 gas from future CCS projects in scalable closed-loop production facilities, using conventional mineral processing equipment.

Aharon Arakel, the director and chief technologist of Pact Renewables said, “Through extensive process and product trials over several years we have confirmed that CO2 gas, when reacted with our proprietary mineral based composites, can produce functional feedstock materials for manufacturing wide-ranging industrial/agricultural products and consumer goods. Interestingly, these products perform equally or even better than their plastic-based counterparts, and being degradable, they eliminate the need for landfilling or incineration after their useful life. More importantly, our feedstock materials are highly flexible, whilst being dimensionally stable, thus they offer enormous opportunities for product design rethinking in order to conform with stringent Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines being introduced globally.”

Dr Arakel went on to say, “Our technology addresses three challenges facing mankind for timely transition from a fossil fuel to a hydrogen economy. Firstly, seawater is an infinite source of metals and minerals which would otherwise need to be extracted from mines with limited reserves. Secondly, the options for solid storage of hydrogen energy and incorporating CO2 from future capture processes in useful products is increasingly being recognised globally as a sustainable approach for decarbonising the climate. Finally, almost 3 billion people experience some form of water scarcity and seawater desalination is expected to grow to fill the water shortage. Using brine discharge from desalination provides both a source of metals and minerals and a means to reduce negative environmental impacts on coastal ecosystems.

Dr Arakel went on to conclude, “We are very pleased with our progress with developing Climedec as a sustainable technology with measurable impactful outcomes, and are currently assessing the application of the technology for large-scale carbon farming. We will soon commence seeking strategic partners to accelerate further development and demonstration of this technology platform for commercial deployment. We are keen to partner with organisations having a strong drive to address the impacts of climate change and vested interest in renewable energy and water supply who can provide us with a powerful voice and guide our efforts in turning Climedec into a viable tool for climate decarbonisation.”

HEALING NONI, CO. REGAINS FULL CAPACITY PRODUCTION AFTER 2018 VOLCANO ERUPTION

One-year-old Noni plant growing in volcanic soil.

Noni fruit turns white when fully ripe.

Leading noni juice manufacturer is poised to meet growing product demand

HILO, HAWAII, USA, May 29, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — Healing Noni, Co., a key manufacturer of noni juice since 1998, announced today that they have fully restored their production capacity after the destruction left by the 2018 eruption of volcano Kilauea. The company lost 85 percent of its harvest of fruit for nearly one-and-a-half years.

With its restored production, Healing Noni will be able to meet the increased demand for noni juice in South Korea, China, Japan, Europe, the USA, and other countries globally. Wholesalers and consumers have been actively seeking health-benefiting products such as noni juice due to the global pandemic.

While most people view the destruction from a volcanic eruption as a time of loss, Michael Harvey, owner of Healing Noni, sees a silver lining. "'From Lava comes Life' is our slogan. This is because flowing Lava breathes Life into the most nutrient-rich virgin volcanic soil. We plant our noni directly in this Lava, which then infuses our noni with super healing minerals and nutrients."

Harvey does not discount the level of destruction and hardship caused by Kilauea's eruption, as Healing Noni was hit hard by the effects of the natural disaster. He recounts, "In April of 2018 when the volcano hit us, it covered many of our farms and blocked us from many of them. Lava cracks opened up all around us, pulling apart the roads and spilling Lava. Many of our farms not covered or blocked were still seriously harmed by sulfur in the air. Farmers couldn't make it to their farms, and our warehouse workers couldn't work at our warehouse because the sulfur levels were dangerously high."

"We had damaged equipment that caused huge losses. Large amounts of the product had to be discarded or reprocessed. It was a nightmare," states Harvey. “Due to the shortages of product, we lost many of our large, longstanding clients as they could not wait for us to recover our supply, given that Healing Noni products made up a large percentage of their product lines. Thankfully, we are now fully recovered and have many more acres of noni planted to meet future demand. We are so happy to be again able to help support the growth of agriculture in the Hawaiian Islands, provide many jobs for the local people, and supply amazing noni products to the world!"

Healing Noni products include the following:

• Pure Hawaiian Noni Juice
• Certified Organic Noni Juice
• Raw Organic Hawaiian Noni Juice
• Noni Goji Fruit Juice
• Noni Nectar Honey
• Noni Powder (capsules & bulk)

Harvey states, "It is a time for hope and restoration…a time to focus on the natural healing components supplied by our planet to enrich our lives."

About Healing Noni: A family-owned business with over 450 acres of noni orchards located on the Big Island of Hawaii, the owners of Healing Noni have been farming Hawaiian Noni Juice for over 20 years. Grown directly in the most mineral-rich, virgin volcanic soil on the planet, Healing Noni is passionate about preserving ancient traditional Hawaiian methods of farming and production (natural fermentation and drip extraction), passed down for generations from the Kūpuna (Hawaiian for "Elders"). Healing Noni juice contains no added water, fruit juices, sugar, additives, or preservatives. The company offers discounts on noni juice bulk orders, plus free shipping on all USA Mainland orders.
